Student Highlight: Luke Speakman

Luke has been taking the industry by storm, and has such notable credits as Matthew in “Weapons”, Josh in “Buddy” (currently in theaters!), as well as “Dementium”, “Godhead”, “The Heretiks” and more!

Not only do we love watching our students gain confidence and succeed in their acting career, but we also love to share their successes with the world! One alumni that has really caught our attention lately is Luke Speakman. You know Luke as Matthew in the hit feature film, “Weapons” , but don’t make the mistake of limiting him to a character. This young actor is making his mark in a variety of projects that are set to come out through 2027!

Luke, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us! You’ve had quite an incredible journey. Let’s start at the beginning, tell us what made you want to become an actor.

I was so young- barely 5 years old! My parents put me in acting to help channel my big emotions and personality! I have always felt at home on set. Accepted. I feel deeply and on set, it’s ok. I could not imagine a life without the challenge of becoming a character. I guess I never ‘wanted” to become an actor, I just always have known that is what I am supposed to be in life.

That’s so rare and amazing you know that! So what is something that surprised you about working on a set?

I would say all the different jobs that are needed for a production. Every time I am on a new project I learn about a new job! There is so much happening behind the scenes that no one ever really knows about and every piece of the puzzle is so important! I know that I am very lucky to have the acting opportunities that I have had, but even if I never book again, I know that there is always something I can do on the other side of the camera to continue being on set!

The opportunities are endless! But your acting has already spoken for itself, do you have a favorite acting moment?

My favorite acting moment is when you have that one difficult scene and it just isn’t hitting the way it is supposed to on set, and the director, you, your cast mates, and everyone are working together to try to figure out what is missing (or what needs to change) and then, after trying and trying .. BAM! It hits. That feeling is indescribable and I love it! Also I love that feeling when you walk off set knowing you gave it your all and didn’t hold back – it is so freeing – hard to describe but it’s the best.

Those are great moments indeed. What is some of the greatest advice you have been given?

Be you because no one else can be.

Yes! And what makes you feel confident?

Being prepared. When I do the work and know my character, the story, and make my choices, I am confident. I might not have interpreted it correctly, but knowing I did all I could makes me feel confident.

Being prepared is such an important key! Do you have any acting projects coming up?

Yes! Buddy released in theaters on August 28th! I also have a couple more coming out but can’t say too much yet. Keep an eye out for John Money, The Heretiks, and Godhead!

CONGRATULATIONS! With all the cool projects you’ve already done, what would be your dream project?

Definitely a full action movie!!! I love stunts and want to do my own stunts. I do American Ninja Warrior, so I would like to use my skills on screen. I have played in a couple action movies, but usually I am just running or jumping. I would love to do a fight scene or one where I am trying to survive a tornado or something!

An action movie would be very fitting for you! Is there any advice you would give to other young actors just getting started?

“No” is never really a no! You WILL hear no. That is going to happen. You will not book everything. However, just because you didn’t book the project, does not mean you didn’t leave an impression on who was in the room. You never know if one day that director or casting agent will have a role and think, “Hey, remember that one kid.. He would be great for this!” Take the no as an opportunity to learn and grow. The part that was meant for you will be for you one day!
